This is a timely publication with chapters from eminent contributors in the field of paediatric cataract. The need of such a textbook in the field of paediatric cataract is justified in the preface along with the goal of this book and how it has been achieved. Each of the chapters is well written and provides the extensive preview of the related topical issues.
The chapter ‘Genetics of Congenital Cataract’ provides insight into the genetics of congenital cataract. Including molecular genetics and genes involved in cataractogenesis. The chapter, ‘State of the Art in Pediatric Cataract Surgery’ is well written and covers most of the issues in paediatric cataract surgery such as timings of surgery, which operation to choose, biometry, intraocular lens (IOL) power, lens power and operative consideration. The chapter, ‘Changes in Ocular Growth after Pediatric Cataract Surgery’ covers the normal ocular growth in children and animal models. The ocular growth after cataract surgery in children is also discussed.
The chapter ‘Incidence of and Risk Factors for Postoperative Glaucoma and Its Treatment in Paediatric Cataract Surgery’ covers the incidence of post-operative glaucoma and its treatment in children is also discussed. The chapter ‘Visual Rehabilitation in Pediatric Aphakia’ is well written and covers initial visual rehabilitation such as aphakic spectacles, contact lenses and IOL as well as amblyopia therapy. The chapter ‘Complications of Pediatric Cataract Surgery’ is well written and discusses postoperative complications such as posterior capsule opacification, glaucoma, retinal detachment, endophthalmitis and toxic anterior segment syndrome. The chapter ‘Complex Cases in Pediatric Cataract’ is particularly noteworthy and covers cataract surgery in children with retinoblastoma, retinopathy of prematurity, anterior lenticonus, posterior lenticonus, congenital rubella syndrome, traumatic cataract, microcornea, paediatric uveitis and syndromic cataract.
In the appendix ‘Delphi Process in the Management of Pediatric Cataract’ is a new concept. Overall, this is a concise and informative book. However, some additions to the future edition will add value. These include, (i) intraocular power calculation or estimation for children in detail; (ii) surgical videos of surgical techniques for cataract surgery; (iii) clinical pictures in various chapters; (iv) references from several prominent authors around the globe; and (v) a chapter on anaesthesia for paediatric cataract.
